LIFT’s workshops provide Family Law information and resources to partner organizations and litigants. This quarter, LIFT presented to seven organizations across New York State. Read some of the highlights below.
CUNY Fatherhood Academy at Kingsborough Community College
CUNY Fatherhood Academy is a free and comprehensive program designed to promote responsible parenting and economic stability for unemployed and underemployed young fathers through education, employment and personal development.
Jessica Stadmeyer, LIFT Director of Legal Resources and Community Engagement, discussed LIFT’s work with fathers including our programs that help with cases of paternity, child support, custody & visitation, and orders of protection.
NYU Bernstein Institute for Human Rights
Ryan Gallagher, LIFT Director of Legal Technology, and Molly Burke, LIFT Policy & Advocacy Advisor, presented LIFT’s Family Law Navigator at the Symposium for Critical Legal Empowerment. The institute’s work focuses on bringing legal information to groups that normally wouldn’t have access, using a model to empower non-lawyers to solve legal issues.
Ryan and Molly met with legal advocates from all over—including South Africa, France, Puerto Rico, Texas, and California—whose work is focused on community legal empowerment outside the traditional notion of representation.
Health & Welfare Council of Long Island – Legal Subcommittee
Blythe Hawthorne, LIFT Bilingual Staff Attorney, presented to a group of Long Island service providers and spoke about family law matters that are specific to parents and caregivers from Nassau and Suffolk counties. She also introduced LIFT’s new Legal Resource Guides that are tailored to the specific issues and regulations of Long Island Family Court.
Red Hook Community Justice Center
Blythe Hawthorne and Jessica Stadmeyer gave an overview of Family Court and LIFT’s services with a focus on our community outreach with immigrant communities and parents who have experienced incarceration.
