LIFT Hosts Panel: Addressing Race and Poverty in the NYS Family Court System: The Importance of Private and Nonprofit Partnerships in Implementing Reform

April 2022

The event, co-sponsored by Proskauer and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, featured opening remarks from Keith Powers, New York City Council Majority Leader, and Karol V. Mason, President of John Jay College of Criminal Justice—and a panel discussion with Jeh Johnson, Former US Secretary of Homeland Security, Hon. Edwina Mendelson, Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for Justice Initiatives, William C. Silverman, Proskauer Head of Pro Bono, and Cathy Cramer, LIFT CEO.

The conversation focused on the investments, resources, and advocacy needed to improve our under-resourced Family Courts following Secretary Johnson’s “Report from the Special Advisor on Equal Justice in the New York State Courts,” which highlights the dehumanizing and disparate impact the courts have on people of color and those living in poverty.
