I hope you will take a moment to read this powerful editorial by The Washington Post which describes the lack of justice for underserved, unrepresented litigants in civil court.
This piece lays bare the devastating consequences of a complex and overburdened legal system for people without an attorney, when nothing short of the fate of their children is at stake. Those of us who work with low-income communities know how easily families can be torn apart when there is no safety net, especially during times of crisis.
For 25 years, Legal Information for Families Today (LIFT) has been helping unrepresented families in Family Court gain access to justice on issues of child support, paternity, custody and visitation and domestic violence. Our work is cost effective, helps the court achieve efficiency and empowers our clients to be their own advocates.
We support The Washington Post for surfacing the injustices of the current system. And we welcome further discussion about the kinds of interventions that positively impact the families we serve.
Thank you for being such an integral part of this discussion. Your support helps sustain our work.
